Pane
A piece of glass.

Panel
A wood surface within a surrounding frame. All panels have structural frames, the interstices of which are filled with sheets or fields called panels.

Panel Door
A door constructed of several smaller components (stiles, rails, loose-fitting panels which allows the door to maintain its shape while expanding and contracting with weather and temperature changes. This door style was first developed in the eighteenth century as an alternative to batten doors, which didn't function well under moisture and climate changes.

Panel profile
This is the dimensional detail design surrounding each panel in a door.

Panic hardware
This is a locking system that allows for the quick opening of commercial exit doors, such as hospitals, universities and schools, concert halls, shopping centers, hotels and offices.

Panning
In replacement window applications, panning is the outside aluminum trim that can extend around the perimeter of the window opening. It is used to cover up the old window material.

Particleboard
This type of building board is made from wood particles and a binding agent. It is often faced with wood veneer.

|
Parting stop
This refers to the long, narrow strip between the upper and lower sash in a double-hung window frame. It allows the two sash to slide past each other.

Passage Door
An interior door connecting two inside rooms or used as a closet door; this door type does not have the strength, insulation or security requirements of an exterior door. Panel construction on passage doors is designed to allow the wood to expand and contract with changes in moisture and temperature; the center panels are allowed to float within the door's frame.

Patio Door
A mainly glass door that opens onto a patio, deck or backyard of a house. The door panel is comprised of stiles, rails and glass to allow for viewing. Originally homeowners asked for glass doors from a glazer, or someone who handles glass. This specialty product was created by distributors in small shops. In the 1960s when aluminum sliding doors became very popular, window manufacturers realized they could make patio doors to fill the openings that used to be filled by solid doors. At that point, the window companies started heavily promoting patio doors, made in aluminum, vinyl and wood. Door companies now also make them in wood, composites and steel.

Patio mull
This is the vertical structure frame member found between doors in a patio door unit.

Pediments
These elements are gables placed over a door or window. They generally include horizontal moulding (i.e., a cornice).

Picture frame casing
This type of weatherstrip that has pile (or “fuzz”) that helps reduce air or dust around a window sash or door panel.

Picture Window
A fixed window typically of a large size in relation to adjacent windows.
|
|
Pilasters
Pilasters are decorative elements that emulate engaged piers or pillars.
|
|
Pile weatherstrip
This type of weatherstrip has pile (or "fuzz") that helps reduce air or dust around a window sash or door panel.

Pilot Hole
A drilled hole that is no larger than the body of the screw (minus the threads).
|
|
Pine
In general, pine is a softwood with a straight grain and minimal color variation. Its color will mellow with age. JELD-WEN also offers solid pine AuraLast® wood that’s protected against wood decay, water absorption and termites.

Pivot Pins
The pins on the bottom corners of single- or double-hung sashes that engage the balance and also allow the sash to pivot for easy removal and installation.

This is flat glass, which is produced by grinding and polishing to create parallel plane surfaces affording excellent vision.

Plumb
A condition that exists when a surface is exactly vertical.

Pocket window
A finless vinyl window that is designed for both retrofit and new construction applications. It is installed into an existing wood or aluminum window frame.

Poplar
This wood species is a smooth, fine-grained hardwood with a relatively smooth texture. It is mostly light in color, but it also features dramatic color variation. Applying darker stained finishes or painted finishes to the wood will help minimize these color shifts.

Prairie grilles
This type of divided lite grille pattern borders the glass on the perimeter of the frame or sash. Also known as Queen Anne grilles.

Precise divided lites (PDL)
Precise divided lites feature wood exterior bars, wood interior bars and an internal metal shadow bar. Both interior and exterior bars are designed with identical widths and are permanently attached to the glass.

Prehung Door Unit
A precut and assembled unit consisting of a door with the locking or passage hardware hung on hinges in a wood frame.

Preserve® protective film
This film protects window and patio door glass from debris and scratches that can occur during shipping and handling or at a construction site. This means no extra cleaning is necessary . It can also be removed easily.

Prime Coat
The first coat of paint in an application that consists of two or more coats.

A hardware finish of baked enamel intended for a later application of paint.

A primary window, as opposed to a storm or combination unit added on.
