As the world's leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, the wise use of environmental resources and a commitment to creating high-performance products has always been at the heart of what we do at JELD-WEN.
Definitions of what makes building products "green" differ widely. JELD-WEN believes in a common-sense approach to sustainability. For some, the best choice may be products that can help save energy and resources. For others, reliable products that are guaranteed to last may be a top priority. Still others may opt to use products made with recycled content or from sustainable resources.
At JELD-WEN, we are proud to offer a wide variety of product options to our customers that best fit their individual needs. Below are brief descriptions of some of the sustainable attributes that can be found within our product lines:
Recycled Content
JELD-WEN's commitment to responsible manufacturing is a common theme that runs throughout the history of the company. One of the earliest examples of innovation is the company's proprietary process for using discarded wood chips to make molded wood fiber interior door facings. JELD-WEN perfected this process in the early 1970s and currently produces tens of thousands of interior doors with left over materials each month. In fact, JELD-WEN recycles and reuses waste material in many of its products and processes.
In addition to JELD-WEN® Molded Fiber Interior Doors with door facings made of recycled wood chips, the company also produces wood fiber composite garage doors with facings and trim boards made of 100 percent recycled wood fiber. Unlike standard steel garage doors that may be covered in wood or plastic, wood fiber composite doors are made from the same durable material throughout - from the trim to the face of the door. Wood composites offer superior insulation because the polystyrene core provides longer lasting insulating value and helps prevent moisture absorption.
Energy Conservation
Window and door upgrades continue to lead the charge for improved energy efficiency and JELD-WEN is proud to offer many ENERGY STAR qualified windows and exterior doors.
The company has been an ENERGY STAR Partner since 1998 and was honored as the only window and door manufacturer to be the U.S. Department of Energy's 2003 ENERGY STAR "Partner of the Year."
All JELD-WEN® Wood and Clad-Wood windows and Steel flush glazed doors come standard with Low-E glass, which saves on energy bills, keeps homes comfortable year-round and reduces UV fading. Low-E is available for all JELD-WEN Vinyl windows and exterior doors as well, and will become a standard feature for most vinyl windows in March 2007. Also, most JELD-WEN® Custom Fiberglass doors and all JELD-WEN® Premium Fiberglass doors, which perform exceptionally well in all climates, are ENERGY STAR qualified.
Low-VOC Products
JELD-WEN AuraLast® wood windows and doors are the first to provide an industry-leading 20-year warranty against wood decay and termite infestation. AuraLast® wood comes standard for all U.S.-produced JELD-WEN pine wood windows and patio doors. It is also available in JELD-WEN® Premium Wood exterior pine doors.
What makes AuraLast® wood different is JELD-WEN's proprietary treatment process. Unlike the industry-standard dip treatment, in which wood is dipped into a solution that gives it a thin top coating, AuraLast wood is created using a vacuum/pressure process. This forces the active ingredients nearly all the way through the wood into the core. Since the process is water-based, there is a 96 percent decrease of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during production, compared to the dip treatment process.
Long-Lasting Products
JELD-WEN's long-lasting products, such as those made with AuraLast® wood, and industry-leading warranties mean fewer replacements are needed during the lifetime of windows and doors. In fact, JELD-WEN Custom Fiberglass doors, JELD-WEN Vinyl windows and JELD-WEN Composite Traditional garage doors come with limited lifetime warranties. This impact is significant, considering reduced fuel costs for manufacturing and distribution, and greatly reduced waste.
Fuel Conservation
JELD-WEN products often don't have to travel far. With more than 30 manufacturing facilities in North America, JELD-WEN windows and doors can be designed and manufactured for specific regions, many times within a 500-mile radius of their final destinations.
Sustainable Forestry
JELD-WEN is committed to preserving the beauty, value and productivity of the forest land owned and managed by the company. JELD-WEN has planted nearly 3 million trees in the past two decades and our timber harvests don't exceed timber growth. We manage for species and size diversity and restock areas damaged by fire and other natural events.
LEED Certification
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system is a national standard for designing and constructing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Established in large part by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED standards are currently available or under development for a variety of building and remodeling project types.
Using JELD-WEN window and door products can help earn rating points for LEED program standards in the following categories:
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Materials and Resources
- Indoor Environmental Quality
In addition, as an aid to the design community, select JELD-WEN products are listed in the 2006 GreenSpec Directory (www.buildinggreen.com).
Industry Certification
JELD-WEN's molded wood fiber interior doors and garage doors are Scientific Certification System (SCS) certified, which means that the door
facings contain at least 51 percent recycled materials. Some wood doors also follow Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) guidelines that may help attain rating points specific to your regional program.
