Costa Mesa Green Home,
Costa Mesa, CA
Real estate developer sought attractive and energy efficient solutions when constructing his unique residence. The Costa Mesa Green Home, the first private residence in Orange County, California, to be certified Platinum by the US Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) for Homes Program. The home accumulated 104 points in the rating, four more than it needed for Platinum certification. The home was constructed using the most innovative sustainable practices, taking diligent care to save energy, water and natural resources while building a more durable, healthy home for its occupants.
The Center for Architecture design team, headed by Dave Otte of Holst Architecture in Portland, determined that workable windows and doors were a must to take advantage of natural ventilation and Portland’s temperate climate. Due to the layout of the one-story building, which was built in the 1880s, the windows needed to be oversized yet still functional to allow for day light to shine through.
Energy efficiency was a top priority, so to reduce demands on the heating and cooling system and increase daylighting views, the building’s envelope was tightly sealed against air infiltration, insulated beyond recommended R-values, and fitted with highperformance, ENERGY STAR®-qualified JELD-WEN® Custom Wood windows and doors with double-pane, Low-E glass.
