Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse Restoration, Chesapeake Bay, Maryland

Overview

It’s a lighthouse so famous it once appeared on a U.S. Postal Service stamp. Now, after more than a century of harsh storms, wind and rain, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse has undergone the makeover it deserves.

After winning the JELD-WEN Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative, in 2007 Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse received the latest in window and door technology, designed to perform exceptionally well in all climates, including coastal conditions. The restoration ensures that this beloved landmark will remain one of Chesapeake Bay’s most recognizable symbols. For homeowners, the restoration exemplifies the challenges that arise in selecting historically appropriate products, tackling difficult locations and incorporating the latest technology in remodeling and renovation projects.

Before

Built in 1875, after more than 130 years this rare screw pile lighthouse was in great need of restoration. Years of exposure to harsh coastal conditions left many of the wood windows either boarded up or inexpensively replaced with historically inaccurate and dysfunctional windows. Existing wood doors had rotted due to the constant damp weather. To protect the structure and beauty of this historic building, eight windows and two entry doors needed to be replaced.

After

The Custom windows are stylistically similar to the originals, but include high-tech features such as AuraLast® Wood, a revolutionary wood protection process developed by JELD-WEN that offers an industry leading 20-year warranty against wood rot and termite infestation. The windows feature real wood simulated divided lites, which more accurately showcase the beauty of the historic architecture.

Exterior Custom fiberglass doors with JELD-WEN’s state-of-the-art technology are designed to withstand harsh coastal conditions yet look and feel like the original wood doors. JELD-WEN fiberglass doors require little maintenance and won’t expand or absorb moisture.

Design Features

The historical renovation features JELD-WEN® Custom Wood Windows with AuraLast® Wood and JELD-WEN Aurora® Custom Fiberglass Doors.
