The golf course isn’t the only feature that’s green at Brasada Ranch^®, a luxury, high-desert resort devoted to health and wellness. Brasada Ranch, covering 1,800 acres in the high desert of Central Oregon, is the first newly constructed destination resort to earn LEED^® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The Discovery Center and core community buildings incorporate reclaimed wood from the historic Ochoco sawmill, as well as lava rock and native materials. The entrance to Brasada Ranch is framed by a refurbished trestle bridge that once served as an irrigation flume.

“From a design standpoint, these materials provided an instant patina that contrasts nicely with contemporary features such as skylights and board form concrete,” Project Architect Richard Carr said.

Carr is the principal of Cottle Carr Yaw (CCY) Architects of Basalt, Colo. The firm designed the resort’s community buildings to LEED Silver and Gold standards and created residential design standards for the community. Installed throughout the community, JELD-WEN Custom Wood Windows are locally produced just 25 miles away in Bend, Ore. To uphold the resort’s focus on sustainability, these windows are ENERGY STAR^® qualified and built with JELD-WEN’s proprietary wood preservation process, AuraLast^® Wood. Solid pine AuraLast Wood provides superior protection from wood rot, water saturation and termites. This protection is supported by JELD-WEN’s exclusive 20-year warranty. AuraLast Wood provides virtually 100 percent saturation of the protective ingredients – from the surface to the core. In contrast, other manufacturers use dip-treated wood, which is protected on the surface only. In addition, AuraLast Wood, JELD-WEN’s proprietary, water-based, vacuum pressure process, protects the environment as well as the product. The process is virtually free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

In addition, community buildings are heated and cooled by a high-tech ground-source lake loop system tied to the pond on the ranch’s private, championship golf course. This system is 60 percent more efficient than traditional systems for heating and cooling. Residents at Brasada Ranch also have the opportunity to select cutting-edge Smart Home Technology from Intelligent Community Services that makes homes and cabins highly efficient and secure.
