Custom Fiberglass Doors: Design Is In The Details
What JELD-WEN® IWP® Aurora™ Custom Fiberglass Doors Can Do That Others Don’t
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. February 07, 2007 JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, continues to transform the fiberglass door category with design innovations that blend beauty, architectural integrity and high performance.
Adding to a long list of “firsts” that JELD-WEN has achieved in fiberglass doors, the company unveiled an Custom Fiberglass exterior door with true 90-degree angles. Precise angles are a design detail no other manufacturer can achieve.
“Our proprietary manufacturing process for custom fiberglass doors makes it possible to recreate these details,” said Shane Meisel, JELD-WEN product marketing manager. “The result is a door that looks exactly like solid wood, but is highly energy efficient and needs virtually no maintenance.”
More sizes JELD-WEN also offers a greater variety of dimensions for builders to choose from. For example, JELD-WEN Craftsman doors are available in a 3’6” x 8’0” sizes, which represents an additional six inches in width, compared to competitors’ doors. JELD-WEN® doors are also available in thicknesses of 1 ¾ or 2 ¼ inches.
“Oversize entry doors are especially popular in today’s home designs, and now the same look can be achieved in custom fiberglass as well as in solid wood,” Meisel said.
More custom options JELD-WEN's fiberglass is the only truly customizable fiberglass option for entry doors, and virtually any design in glass is possible. JELD-WEN allows builders and homeowners to design their own custom glass inserts, drawing upon the company’s extensive library of glass options. At the International Buliders’ Show, JELD-WEN debuted a new glass design that evokes flowering vines. A JELD-WEN designer created the glass pattern, but the same drawing board-to-production line process can be applied to many designs.
More styles With more than 25 styles from classic to Craftsman, JELD-WEN is the only manufacturer to offer such a wide variety of choices for high-end custom fiberglass exterior doors. Also at this year’s International Builders’ Show, JELD-WEN unveiled two new exterior door styles: a four-panel door with a bottom arch (#A465) and an eight-panel door with a speakeasy grille (#A1209).
More high-performance benefits In 2005, JELD-WEN Custom Fiberglass exterior doors received a Consumers Digest Best Buy rating. Because they are made of fiberglass, doors perform exceptionally well in harsh climates. These doors require virtually no maintenance, and won’t swell, fade or warp in extreme temperatures. These doors are exceptional because they are the only doors that offer upscale elegance for those consumers who would normally select only solid wood products but have exposed entries or live in extreme climate areas.
JELD-WEN doors are made with two strong skins composed of multiple layers of tinted resins, base colors, fiberglass and reinforcing materials. The skins are permanently sealed onto an engineered wood frame, creating a seamless appearance and exceptional protection. Each door has a PolyMicro polyurethane core, which provides a heavy, dense and solid feel. The doors are factory finished with JELD-WEN’s Permalane system, in which layers of specially formulated grain filler and UV-protective stain coats are applied. Each door then gets a final protective top coat, created to withstand extreme environments.
Transforming fiberglass doors According to recent research, the fiberglass door category is considered “explosive” – total growth in the past five years has more than doubled. And while steel still graces the exteriors of most homes these days, JELD-WEN believes the future is fiberglass and is working hard to gain the leadership position in the category.
While market share of steel exterior doors has slightly declined from 68 percent in 2001 to 65 percent in 2005, fiberglass has grown from seven to 14 percent during the same time period. The category potential has led JELD-WEN to expand aggressively and pioneer a number of manufacturing advances. The company has invested heavily in developing new processes for fiberglass door manufacturing, resulting in a high-end Custom Fiberglass exterior door line and a more affordable Premium Fiberglass product.
