Ben’s Birdies For Children
Pro Golfer Ben Crane, JELD-WEN and Supporters Donate $38,400 to Friends of the Children
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. November 28, 2006 Oregon’s home-grown golf pro Ben Crane finished the PGA TOUR season with much more than a list of stats to add to his bright career. His performance throughout the year was dedicated to a worthy local cause – mentoring Oregon’s neediest children.
Every time Crane made a birdie or eagle, he and his sponsor, JELD-WEN, pledged donations to Friends of the Children – Portland, the founding site of a national nonprofit organization that matches the community’s most vulnerable youth with long-term, professional, full-time mentors. Based on Crane’s performance of 301 birdies and seven eagles this year, the Crane family donated $15,750, and JELD-WEN matched this amount. Individuals were also encouraged to pledge additional support based on Crane’s tournament play. This grassroots effort raised $6,900. The total donation generated by Ben’s Birdies for Children is $38,400.
“My wife, Heather, and I are delighted to support an organization dedicated to meaningful change in my home state of Oregon,” Crane said. “Friends of the Children is a perfect match for us and JELD-WEN.”
JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, based in Klamath Falls, Ore., has sponsored Crane since 2003. That same year the University of Oregon graduate clinched a dramatic victory and his first PGA TOUR title at the BellSouth Classic. In 2005, Crane won the US Bank Championship and had six top-10 finishes.
“JELD-WEN is committed to supporting innovative educational groups undertaking crucial work with families throughout Oregon,” said Gina Monterossi, sports marketing manager for JELD-WEN. “Friends of the Children helps young people build self-esteem and learn to rely on themselves, just as the pros demonstrate on the golf course.”
“Personal commitment like that demonstrated by Ben Crane and JELD-WEN is absolutely vital to continuing our work with children and families in Oregon,” said Staci Sigala, development manager for Friends of the Children. “We thank them both for their support.”
About Friends of the Children – Portland
Friends of the Children is a revolutionary mentoring program committed to helping the community’s most vulnerable children develop the relationships, goals and skills necessary to break the cycles of poverty, abuse and violence in order to become contributing members of society.
The group helps children who have a high degree of vulnerability to school failure, gang and drug involvement, teenage pregnancy and criminal behavior by providing them each with a paid, professional mentor, called a Friend. Friends spend a minimum of four hours every week with each child, from kindergarten through high school graduation, teaching them valuable life skills, instilling positive attitudes and helping them grow into responsible adults.
