Greenbuild 2009: JELD-WEN to Present Wide-Reaching Sustainable Product Initiatives, Processes
Recycled materials, renewable energy, and new technologies part of diverse environmental strategy

Klamath Falls, Ore. November 05, 2009 — Even in a challenging housing climate, sustainable building continues to draw increasing interest from homebuyers, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). That’s why JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, will showcase its diverse approach to sustainability and environmentally sensitive initiatives during the 2009 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, Nov. 11-13, in Phoenix.

“JELD-WEN has always taken a practical approach to manufacturing and product development and pioneered a number of ‘green’ building practices that, 30 or 40 years ago, were simply called good business,” said Ron Saxton, chief environmental officer. “Today, the company is focusing on a multi-pronged approach to sustainable product innovation.”

At Greenbuild 2009, JELD-WEN will highlight its ongoing efforts to produce environmentally conscious products and implement industry-leading sustainable practices, such as:

Certified wood windows pass the test
JELD-WEN offers Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) certified wood windows and patio doors as part of its Custom Wood window line. The company has achieved chain of custody plant certification from SFI Inc., based on third-party audits that ensure facilities meet SFI’s high standards of forest products stewardship. The company’s SFI certified wood products include Custom Wood windows, patio doors and trim components made with AuraLast® wood.

Sustainable projects
JELD-WEN products are preferred for high-profile projects where sustainability is the highest priority. For example, JELD-WEN® windows and doors were integral parts of the new AIA chapter headquarters in Portland, Ore., which is the first AIA building in the world to achieve a LEED Platinum certification. The sustainable products contributed to LEED credits through materials and resources selections and process innovation, and were specifically designed and built to achieve points for day lighting and views.

AuraLast wood: less VOCs, longer product life
Solid pine AuraLast wood from JELD-WEN provides superior protection from wood decay, water saturation and termites, and offers homeowners a long-lasting material. AuraLast wood windows, doors and trim are supported by JELD-WEN’s exclusive 20-year warranty, and AuraLast door frames are backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

What makes AuraLast wood different is JELD-WEN’s proprietary treatment process. Unlike the industry-standard dip treatment, which protects the surface only, AuraLast wood provides virtually 100 percent penetration of the protective ingredients – from the surface to the core. The water-based process results in a 96 percent decrease of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during production compared to conventional dip treatments, making AuraLast wood environmentally conscious and durable.

ENERGY STAR® qualified products lower utility bills
Window and door upgrades continue to lead the charge for improved energy efficiency at home. JELD-WEN has the largest and broadest offering of ENERGY STAR qualified windows and exterior doors in the industry. The company has been an ENERGY STAR partner since 1998.

Many JELD-WEN® wood and vinyl windows come standard with Low-E glass, which helps rooms stay warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Also, JELD-WEN® exterior doors offer energy efficient choices that are ENERGY STAR qualified.

Turning a water hog into sustainable doors
JELD-WEN® Juniper doors deliver a one-of-a-kind look and hold the key to a number of environmental benefits as well. The company is the first major door manufacturer to utilize juniper, which is considered a “water hog.”  The overgrowth of the species, especially in the Western states, has been linked to the disappearance of critical water springs in high desert regions, as a single tree can consume 30 to 50 gallons of water per day. JELD-WEN Juniper doors were among 21 products named in this year’s Building Products MVP Awards.

Door skins that contribute to healthier indoor air quality
To meet the strict standards of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) formaldehyde standards,  JELD-WEN offers Phase 1- and Phase 2-compliant no-added formaldehyde (NAF) door skins in accordance with the CARB Airborne Toxic Control Measure. NAF is the highest achievement claimed by a CARB-ATCM regulated product. JELD-WEN uses the term NAF on doorskins and many fully assembled doors because formaldehyde is not added to the product. NAF is markedly different than the NAUF designation promoted by other companies.  NAUF stands for “No Added Urea Formaldehyde” and is an indication that some other form of formaldehyde was added.

Recycled materials in interior and garage doors
JELD-WEN® Molded Interior doors and Wood Composite garage doors feature facings and trim boards made of recycled wood fiber. Since the early 1970s, JELD-WEN has been a pioneer in using recycled wood chips to make molded interior door skins and garage doors. Today, the company’s molded interior doors are Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) certified for their recycled content.

Powered by renewable energy
JELD-WEN voluntarily supports renewable energy sources and became a Pacific Power BlueSky Visionary Partner in Oregon. Now, 30 percent of the company’s power in three Oregon locations comes from renewable sources. Overall, JELD-WEN has committed to purchase more than 200,000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy per month.

Windows and doors travel shorter distances
JELD-WEN products don’t often have to travel very far. With more manufacturing locations than any competitor, JELD-WEN® windows and doors can be designed and manufactured for specific regions, many times within 500 miles of their final destinations.

Sustainable building leadership
JELD-WEN is a leader of some of the most recognized sustainable organizations in the country. Long a proponent of sustainable building practices, JELD-WEN was the first window and door manufacturer to join the Green Building Initiative (GBI) as a full member, and currently holds a position on the board of directors. The company is also a Cornerstone Partner of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and helps support practices to create a stronger, richer build environment.
