JELD-WEN Drives Home the Benefits of More Energy Efficient Windows in Energy Trust Home Makeover Contest

Portland, Ore. May 04, 2009 — PORTLAND, Ore.– As a leading global manufacturer of energy efficient windows and doors, JELD-WEN is showcasing the benefits that more efficient products have for today’s homeowners.

JELD-WEN is a major participant in Energy Trust of Oregon’s Home Energy Makeover Contest, where four winners from Oregon will be selected to receive up to $25,000 in energy-saving improvements. Oregon homeowners can enter online www.HomeEnergyMakeoverOregon.com by May 5 at 6 p.m. Winners, selected based on energy use per square foot and potential to demonstrate comprehensive energy savings, will be announced June 15, 2009.

Each makeover will start with a whole-house Home Performance assessment using state-of-the-art diagnostic testing to determine where a home is wasting energy and what improvements can maximize savings. Winners will receive a customized package of Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® improvements that could include:

  • High-efficiency gas furnace or electric heat pump
  • Energy-efficient electric water heater or tankless gas water heater
  • High-performance windows
  • Insulation, air sealing and duct sealing
  • Energy-saving lighting

“Homes waste energy in many small ways that can really add up,” said Peter West, director of energy programs, Energy Trust. “The Energy Trust Home Energy Makeover Contest gives us an opportunity to demonstrate how homeowners can track down that waste and make cost-effective improvements that pay for themselves over time.”

Homes consume nearly one-quarter of all energy used in the U.S. today. And behind our front doors lies a little known fact: most homes (older and newer) can be classified as “energy hogs,” wasting as much as 30 percent of the total energy they use. That leaves homeowners paying much more than needed each month in energy costs.

“Manufacturing energy efficient products has been a core priority for JELD-WEN for many years. With the potential for additional tax credit savings for homeowners who upgrade to more efficient products, there’s no better time than now to show the difference these changes can truly make when it comes to savings and increased comfort,” said Les Stephens, product marketing manager for JELD-WEN.

Makeover packages will include products and services donated by contest sponsors, including JELD-WEN. Visit www.HomeEnergyMakeoverOregon.com for more information or to review the complete contest rules.
