Sustainable Product: JELD-WEN Offers Environmentally Friendly SFI Certified Option For Windows and Patio Doors
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. June 24, 2008 As part of its growing commitment to sustainability, JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, is now offering Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) certified wood windows and patio doors as part of its Custom Wood window line.
The company has achieved chain of custody plant certification from SFI Inc., based on third-party independent audits that ensure facilities meet SFI’s high standards of forest products stewardship.
With over 152 million acres certified across North America, the fully-independent, nonprofit SFI sustainable forestry certification program is one of the largest in the world, with a standard based on principles and measures that promote responsible environmental behavior and sound forest management, including measures to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, species at risk and forests of exceptional conservation value. Chain-of-custody certification means a company has a tracking system in place that identifies the amount of certified, uncertified and recycled content in the forest products it buys, uses or sells.
JELD-WEN SFI certified wood products include Ponderosa pine Custom Wood windows, patio doors and trim components. Nearly 90 percent of the wood windows and patio doors the company manufactures are pine, and now, customers will have the option to purchase SFI certified Ponderosa pine products from JELD-WEN's Bend, Ore., plant. JELD-WEN SFI certified products cost an additional 10 percent and also feature JELD-WEN’s revolutionary AuraLast wood®.
Solid pine AuraLast wood from JELD-WEN provides superior protection from wood decay, water saturation and termites. This protection is supported by JELD-WEN’s exclusive 20-year warranty. The proprietary, water-based, vacuum-pressure process is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it more environmentally friendly than the industry standard “dip treatment” method.
“With SFI certification, AuraLast wood and energy efficient glass technology, we are able to offer arguably one of the most environmentally friendly wood window choices on the market today,” said Brian Hedlund, product marketing manager for JELD-WEN. “Achieving certification is a major benefit for our customers because they are looking for sustainable options. It also fits well with our vision to be the clear global leader in the industry, which includes sustainability and environmental stewardship.”
