Energy Efficiency: Hot Weather Means Greater Needs for Sunblock to Your Home
Unseen Benefits of Energy Efficient Windows and Doors

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. February 12, 2007 — Most homeowners know that upgrading windows and doors can save money and conserve energy. However, a lesser-known benefit of energy efficient windows and doors is their proven resistance to harmful UV rays.

Homeowners are becoming increasingly sensitive to interior fading and wear and tear – not only because they want to keep the carpet and drapes from fading, but also because UV exposure is perceived as an increasing health hazard.

To help homeowners plan for remodels during the warmer months of the year, here are a few tips from JELD-WEN window and door experts on giving your home a healthy dose of sunblock:

1. Take a directional focus.
The direction that windows and doors face can make a huge difference in energy efficiency and UV exposure for the home. Ensure that south- and west-facing windows and doors have the highest level of protection, for example awnings that help shade exterior openings.

2. Make Low-E glass a “must-have.”
Low-E glass is the most common energy efficient material when it comes to windows and doors. It also blocks up to 85 percent of harmful UV rays that cause interior fading. The coating on Low-E glass reflects the sun’s heat outdoors in summer while allowing desirable visible light indoors.

3. Don’t forget about doors.
When it comes to exterior surfaces, today’s front doors boast unseen benefits too. Look for exterior doors that have a proven UV-resistant coating, like the JELD-WEN® collection. In combination with dense cores, this makes for an ultra-energy efficient door that can stand up to a beating from sun exposure.

4. Focus on proven methods tested against industry standards, not bells and whistles.
Window and door manufacturers achieve efficiency in different ways, from Low-E glass to argon gas-filled insulating glass. The bottom line is to make sure the products are tested and certified for efficiency using industry standards, no matter what technology is employed. For the best all-around UV-resistance and energy performance, look for the ENERGY STAR® label appropriate for your region.
