Shining a Light on Innovative Leaders
Metropolitan Home ranks JELD-WEN’s lighthouse restoration initiative among the world’s best designs
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. June 24, 2008 The initiative was a “shore thing” from the start.
Recognized for its vision and passion, JELD-WEN’s Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative was selected for Metropolitan Home’s annual Design 100 list. JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of windows and doors, was recognized for its efforts to help preserve beloved U.S. lighthouses by providing new windows and doors.
“It’s an honor for the initiative to rank among the world’s best,” said Joyce Richter, lighthouse project manager for JELD-WEN. “The company sees a great need for historic restoration to preserve these national treasures, and our windows and doors perform so reliably, even in coastal climates. It’s a great way to have such a significant impact in local communities.”
The JELD-WEN Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative began in 2005 as a way to preserve beloved landmarks with the latest in window and door technology, thereby helping restore the original architecture and beauty of the historic structures. To date, JELD-WEN’s initiative has helped restore Umpqua River Lighthouse on Oregon’s southern coastline, Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse on Chesapeake Bay, and Wind Point Lighthouse on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Searching for the best
Introduced 11 years ago, Metropolitan Home’s Design 100 list has long been recognized as a reflection of the trends, designs and movements that shape society. Editors at the magazine emphasized that the list is a balance of stylish products, community service, architecture, new ideas, responsible companies, food trends, the green movement and more.
For the 2008 Design 100 list, the JELD-WEN Reliable Lighthouse Restoration Initiative was ranked among other innovative design and ideas such as Apple’s iPhone, the smart® car, London’s St. Pancras Train Station, and Green Walls by G-SKY.
