JELD-WEN Garage Door Makeover- Before and After Case Study

July 02, 2007 — Julie Nusbaum of Hamilton, Ind. spent countless years with large, lackluster garage doors that did nothing for her home’s facade. Tired of living with blasé garage doors that also suffered from severe performance issues, Julie decided to enter the JELD-WEN Garage Door makeover contest this year.  The result of her winning entry was a complete garage facelift, which has made not only a dramatic difference when it comes to enhancing the style of her home, it has also solved many other issues as well.

Today's garages take up a tremendous amount of space and for many homeowners who are looking for ways to add curb appeal, Nusbaum's before and after case study helps demonstrate the incredible difference that choosing the right door can have when it comes to enhancing the performance and style of a garage. The dramatic difference can be seen in the details of this project, which we invite you to share with your readers.

 Before:

  • Like many home’s, Nusbaum’s garage had standard doors that stuck out and worked against the rest of her home’s attractive design; the doors were lacking creativity and taking away from the overall beauty and curb appeal.
  • Although her garage is heated, Nusbaum’s garage doors did not have energy efficient features and let in cold air and moisture, which can increase utility bills and make this space useless to homeowners.
  • Nusbaum’s doors blocked natural light from entering the space, making the garage feel dark and cramped whenever they were closed.

After:

  • Performance upgrade: Made from innovative wood composite material, Nusbaum received new JELD-WEN®  Carriage House Series Garage Doors. Wood composite door technology offers a distinct advantage when it comes to an affordable, energy efficient, and low-maintenance option that offers the beauty and style of real wood. These doors perform exceptionally well, with no cracking, sagging, separating or shrinking, even in extreme temperatures.
  • Style enhancement: Because Nusbaum has two garage doors, they make up a significant amount of her home’s exterior, making them one of her home’s biggest feature. She now has two garage doors that fit her home’s architecture, adding to her home’s curb appeal rather than detract. Nusbaum’s new doors also have a more detailed pattern than her previously plain ones and the use of two complementary colors and lines adds depth and helps break up the large surface area.
  • Functional features: Nusbaum’s new garage doors have windows that allow natural light into the garage which can help save on electricity bills since she plans to do hobbies and move her exercise equipment into her garage. The new garage doors are also now more energy efficient and offer better insulation that prevents moisture absorption. This is an important feature to homeowners as the The Perfect Home Survey, completed by an independent research firm commissioned by JELD-WEN, found that 55 percent of respondents rate having an energy efficient garage door as important/very important. In addition to the environmentally friendly benefits of energy saving garage doors, her new wood fiber composite garage doors are made of 100 percent recycled wood fiber.
