JELD-WEN Broadens Offering Of Storm-Resistant Windows & Doors
New products with the industry’s best warranties, DP ratings and widest range of options

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. February 07, 2007 — It’s a tough world out there, and JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, has the products to deal with it.

This year, the company is unveiling new windows and doors designed especially for storm-prone areas. These products feature industry-leading design pressure (DP) ratings and JELD-WEN’s proprietary ImpactGardTM protection, designed to meet the toughest building codes, especially in Florida. Builders and homeowners will also find an expanded range of options.

How ImpactGard Protection Works
ImpactGard protection is a complete window system that includes laminated glass, which has an interlayer sandwiched between two sheets of glass to deliver extra impact resistance.

What makes ImpactGard protection different is that the interlayer JELD-WEN uses is 100 times more rigid than the industry standard, delivering five times the tear strength. JELD-WEN® windows and patio doors with ImpactGard protection are designed to meet the toughest building codes and offer an industry-leading 10-year warranty.

JELD-WEN is the only manufacturer in the nation to offer impact-resistant technology for its complete wood, vinyl and aluminum window lines. Wood windows with ImpactGard are available nationwide, and Premium Atlantic Vinyl windows with this option are available in the southeastern states. ImpactGard protection is available in aluminum windows and patio doors in the JELD-WEN Premium Atlantic product line, which covers the southeastern states and Gulf of Mexico region.

Maximum window strength is important in severe weather because a broken window or door can affect a home’s structural integrity.  Positive and negative air pressure caused by a storm can cause serious damage, and if a window or door breaks, that pressure can literally destroy the entire structure. Windows and doors are rated by how resistant they are to positive and negative air pressure, wind and rain. This rating is called design pressure (DP).

ImpactGard protection helps prevent wind damage by resisting impacts from debris and keeping the building envelope intact during storms. In fact, windows with ImpactGard protection can withstand a nine-pound 2x4 board traveling at 34 miles per hour.

Even if the glass cracks under pressure, the fragments will adhere to the interlayer, minimizing the danger of falling or flying glass.

JELD-WEN’s DP ratings blow away the competition
JELD-WEN has introduced a contemporary aluminum patio door perfect for Southeastern regions. The JELD-WEN® Premium Atlantic Aluminum Sliding Patio Door features a standard DP 80 rating, even for openings that are up to 16 feet wide. ImpactGard protection is optional for an added level of protection.

The Premium Atlantic Aluminum Sliding patio door comes in a variety of sizes and offers optional stainless steel rollers so doors glide easily on their tracks. Doors can slide into a pocket in the wall or stack up neatly in front of each other. White and anodized bronze colors, textured glass, SDLs and multipoint locks are some of the other options available.

Another storm-resistant product from JELD-WEN is the all-panel IWP® AuroraTM Custom Fiberglass Exterior Door. Selected styles are impact-rated and carry a DP 50 rating.

Additional benefits of storm-resistant windows and doors
These products pass the American Society for Testing and Materials standards for preventing forced entry. ImpactGard protection also reduces ultraviolet exposure by blocking 95 percent of harmful rays, which can cause furniture, fabric and other materials in the home to fade. Sound transmission also is reduced. Compared to a single pane of glass that has a Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of around 27, an insulated laminated glass unit can achieve an STC rating of up to 35, which has the ability to block even loud construction noises.
