Beyond Energy Efficiency: JELD-WEN to Showcase Diverse Approach to Sustainability at Greenbuild 2008
Certifications, new technologies and innovations add up to environmental leadership position

Klamath Falls, Ore. November 06, 2008 — While energy efficiency and recycling are recognized pillars of the green building movement, they are just a few of the many sustainable initiatives that JELD-WEN, the world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, will feature during the 2008 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, Nov. 18-20.

Certified wood windows pass the test
JELD-WEN is now offering Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) certified wood windows and patio doors as part of its Custom Wood window line. The company has achieved chain of custody plant certification from SFI Inc., based on third-party audits that ensure facilities meet SFI’s high standards of forest products stewardship.

The company’s SFI certified wood products include Custom Wood windows, patio doors and trim components made with AuraLast® wood. For its achievements in environmentally responsible forestry and sustainable construction education, JELD-WEN was honored this year with a 2008 Sustainable Forestry Initiative President’s Award.

AuraLast wood decreases harmful VOCs, extends product life
Solid pine AuraLast wood from JELD-WEN provides superior protection from wood decay, water saturation and termites, and offers homeowners a long-lasting material. AuraLast wood windows, doors and trim are supported by JELD-WEN’s exclusive 20-year warranty, and AuraLast door frames are backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

What makes AuraLast wood different is JELD-WEN’s proprietary treatment process. Unlike the industry-standard dip treatment, which protects on the surface only, AuraLast wood provides virtually 100 percent penetration of the protective ingredients – from the surface to the core. The water based process results in a 96 percent decrease of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during production compared to conventional dip treatments, making AuraLast wood environmentally conscious and durable.

ENERGY STAR® qualified products lower utility bills

Turning a water hog into sustainable doors
JELD-WEN® Juniper doors deliver a one-of-a-kind look and hold the key to a number of environmental benefits as well. The company is the first major door manufacturer to utilize juniper, which is considered a “water hog.”  The overgrowth of the species, especially in the Western states, has been linked to the disappearance of critical water springs in high desert regions, as a single tree can consume 30 to 50 gallons of water per day. Since invasive juniper out-competes several native plant species, this leads to a loss of forests and wildlife habitat. So much so, state and local governments have offered programs to help support juniper removal in areas where it is literally a growing problem.

Recycled materials in interior and garage doors
JELD-WEN® Molded Interior doors and Wood Composite garage doors feature facings and trim boards made of recycled wood fiber.
