Top 5 Universal Design Window and Door Tips

February 13, 2008 — Universal design is defined as adding elements that improve the daily comfort, ease of use and safety of homes for residents. These features become even more important as homeowners enter retirement age, and either build a new house or remodel an existing home to make the structure more user friendly. When it comes to windows and doors, here are a few tips from JELD-WEN that easily fit into the universal design concept:

1. Improve doorway access
Wider doorways make it easier to enter a home and maneuver from room to room. A 36-inch width allows added access for wheelchairs and walkers. In addition, smooth, flush door transitions, such as the one on the JELD-WEN® IWP® multi-slide door system with an integrated track, also eliminate tripping hazards.

2. Add window inserts to increase visibility
Rather than relying on peepholes to safely see visitors at the front door, installing window inserts and sidelights make viewing more convenient.

3. Select low-maintenance products
Products that provide superior performance and low-maintenance benefits give homeowners long-lasting durability without the need for constant upkeep. New “Neat™ glass” features a layer of titanium dioxide that reacts with the sun’s UV rays (even on cloudy days) to break down and loosen dirt. This allows rainwater to easily rinse away grime and greatly reduces spots on windows. In addition, JELD-WEN windows and doors made with AuraLast® wood carry an industry-leading 20-year warranty against wood decay and termite infestation, giving homeowners peace of mind that their windows and doors will stand up to the elements over time.

4. Maximize space with pocket doors
Homeowners facing mobility issues prefer pocket doors that slide open and closed. Pocket doors also create an additional 10 square feet of usable space versus the swing area taken up by a traditional hanging door.

5. Choose easy-to-use window locks
The ability to operate windows is a top priority for baby boomer homeowners. Locking mechanisms that can be engaged simply are suitable for homeowners with hand movement and strength challenges. The JELD-WEN® MAG-Lock™ window locking mechanism can be operated with one hand and comes with industry-leading magnet technology as well as a sleek, seamless design for an integrated look.
