Scholarship Contest Challenges Students to Design Innovative Entrance Doors

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. February 13, 2008 — Design and architecture students across the country are getting a career-defining assignment from JELD-WEN this school year. The world’s leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors is challenging college students to dream up what’s next for entry doors.

Contestants in the third JELD-WEN Student Door Design Contest will “Follow the Line to the Next Design.” This theme was chosen by JELD-WEN because all great architecture has a common thread, or line, that makes it compelling and enduring. Students are asked to find and express their inspiration for an entrance door design from their choice of architectural styles. Two grand-prize winners will each receive a $3,000 scholarship.

“We want to see what today’s most talented students can create, and challenge them to think deeply about door styles as an integral part of home design,” said Elizabeth Souders, marketing manager for JELD-WEN. “This competition offers students the potential for scholarships plus a real-world assignment that will prepare them for their future careers as home design professionals.”

This year’s entry form and contest rules are available online at www.jeld-wen.com/studentdesign. The contest opened on Sept. 1, 2007, and concludes Feb. 29, 2008. Scholarship winners will be selected based on suitability of the design for contemporary architecture, usability as a door, creativity, uniqueness and attention to detail. Designs can include wood, glass, decorative hardware, metal accents or other materials.

Last year, JELD-WEN received just under 200 entries from students at 57 schools nationwide and selected two winners:

Nathan Williams, a student at Virginia Tech, designed a modular door that allows users to open individual swinging panels to let in light and air. It is a modern take on a traditional Dutch door that is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity in JELD-WEN’s product lines.

Anna McCorvey’s design from the 2007 contest harkens back to an earlier historical period, the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. McCorvey’s radius-top door with an asymmetrical transom is a composition of curving forms. At the time of the contest, she was a third-year architecture student at Howard University.

“The 2008 design contest winners will join a talented roster of previous student winners,” Souders said. “We look forward to seeing their designs.”
