Major Opportunity Comes Knocking for Design Students
Aspiring students show off talents in hopes of winning major scholarships

Klamath Falls, Ore. May 09, 2006 — JELD-WEN is opening the door for architecture and design students to not only help them get a jump-start on their careers, but also earn major scholarships and trips to industry-related events totaling nearly $20,000.

As part of the second annual JELD-WEN Student Door Design Contest, individuals are invited to create and submit original designs for residential front doors, focusing on the theme of “honoring architecture.” The entry form and rules will be posted at www.jeld-wen.com/studentdesign in early summer. The contest concludes with the selection of winners in November 2006.

“The sky’s the limit when it comes to design possibilities for the front door,” said Jim Hackett, vice president of marketing for JELD-WEN doors. “Doors are a great design challenge because they must combine both stand-out style and functionality. This competition gives students a solid opportunity to not only build their portfolios, but also to potentially earn some great rewards for creative thinking and skill.”

Winners will be selected based on the originality of their front door designs, the overall concept, creative use of materials and the strength of whatever styles they choose to convey. Designs can include panels of wood or other building materials, glass and decorative hardware – any element that reinforces the student’s stated design objectives.

JELD-WEN will award two grand-prize packages, including a $5,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to the next International Builders’ Show, where students will have access to leaders in the building industry and hundreds of educational seminars. Three finalists will also receive $1,000 scholarships. One representative from JELD-WEN and a panel of independent judges will review the entries and select the finalists.

“This a great way to support the industry and help aspiring design and architecture students advance in their careers,” Hackett said. “We were so impressed with the originality and quality of designs from last year’s group of entrants. We can’t wait to see what students will come up with this year.”

Last year’s door design contest concluded in the fall. After receiving entries from students at 44 colleges and universities, JELD-WEN and a panel of independent experts selected the scholarship winners. Two grand-prize winners attended the 2006 IBS trade show in Orlando, Fla.

The winners of last year’s JELD-WEN Student Door Design Contest were architecture students from the University of Kentucky, and they drew their design concepts from personal experience. For example, Brandi Berryman designed her door with the idea of luck in mind and the visual of crossed fingers.

“As leaders in the custom door category, we’re making it a priority to engage the next generation of architects and designers,” Hackett said. “We want to familiarize students with the whole range of design possibilities that can be achieved in a residential context, starting with the front door.”
