JELD-WEN Joins Green Building Initiative
Window and door manufacturer to take leadership role in new organization

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. March 18, 2008 — Long a proponent of sustainable building practices, JELD-WEN, a leading manufacturer of reliable windows and doors, is the first in that category to join the Green Building Initiative (GBI) as a full member.

“JELD-WEN has always taken an efficient approach to manufacturing and product development,” said Ron Saxton, the company’s chief environmental officer. “This philosophy has resulted in a number of environmentally beneficial practices and products during our 48 years. By joining the Green Building Initiative, JELD-WEN is taking a leadership position in helping builders across the country develop homes that are energy efficient and better for the environment.”

“We are delighted that an environmental leader like JELD-WEN has chosen to take a prominent role within our organization,” said Ward Hubbell, president of the Green Building Initiative. “The company’s marketing know-how and stellar reputation will help us greatly as we work to accelerate the adoption of green practices among mainstream builders.”

Saxton will serve on the GBI board of directors as it expands its membership and provides support to a growing number of regional builder associations.

First window and door member

JELD-WEN is the first window and door manufacturer to join the GBI and brings a wealth of sustainable product knowledge to the organization. The company offers a number of products that contribute to green building, including interior doors and wood composite garage doors made from recycled wood chips, as well as a few varieties of wood stile and rail doors that hold FSC certification. In addition, JELD-WEN has been an ENERGY STAR® partner since 1998.

A pillar of JELD-WEN’s environmental stewardship is its AuraLast® wood windows, doors and door frames. AuraLast is a new water-based process for preserving wood that is backed by a 20-year warranty against decay and termite damage. AuraLast reduces harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by 96 percent compared to traditional, solvent-based dip-treatment methods.

GBI is a nonprofit organization that accelerates green building practices by promoting environmentally progressive approaches that are also practical, affordable and accessible to mainstream builders, architects and developers. What’s significant about GBI is that it works with state and local home builder associations to develop local green building programs that make sense for that region. These programs help builders develop homes that are energy-efficient, healthier to live in, and better for the environment.
