Plan a Home Improvement Project
The goal of this project is to give new life to a room and give your home a little equity boost in the process.
Example Projects:
- Remodel your entire home
- Make a dramatic statement with a bay or fixed window, or a new front entrance
- Increase the light or ventilation in a room
- Improve access to a room, yard or patio
- Enhance the style and beauty of a room
- Save money by increasing your home’s energy efficiency
Step 1: The Project
Select a project for your home that you would like to improve. It could be a single room, or the whole house. If you are preparing your home for sale, start with the front of the house: replacing your windows and front door will have the most on curb appeal and value.
Step 2: Research
Thoroughly research the project you have chosen. Read articles in books and magazines. Search the internet. Many websites offer online articles of home remodeling projects. Ask your family, friends, coworkers or other homeowners about their experience. Learn everything there is to know about the project you want to update.
Step 3: Design
Find a design that works for you, whether it is practical or a vision that you have always dreamed of. Begin sketching out your ideas and imagining your remodeled home. If you are adding, expanding or changing the layout of a room, think about how the new space will be used and how the changes will affect the dynamics of the specific area and the overall context of your home.
Step 4: Budget
Create a budget. Research the cost of materials before you start, and leave room in the budget for unexpected expenses. Knowing that your remodeling project will cost more than you expect will give you an advance notice to make any necessary changes and reduce avoidable strain throughout the duration of your project.
Step 5: Schedule
Will you hire a professional contractor or do-it-yourself? Either way, you should plan a start date and a finish date to stay on track with your new home improvement design. Home improvement projects are easiest to do when the weather is mild. Good luck!
Step 6: Get Advice
You may be able to do most of the remodel project yourself. Plan ahead and have someone in line for any help you may run into. Before getting started check around to find someone who specializes in the specific area you are remodeling or has done the work before.
TIP: If you hire a professional, make sure you negotiate a written contract before any work begins. Whether your remodel plan is simple or complex, it is always good to talk about any expectations beforehand. Be very clear about the work to be done and any materials that will be needed. It is a good idea to keep a list of questions you run into along the way.
Step 7: Permits
Get permission for any additional add-on projects, if necessary. A building or legal permit may be required for any structural changes you make to your home. It is a good idea to research local building codes and safety regulations to insure all procedures are being met. Permits are your responsibility. Although most contractors will take care of any permits in advance, it is always a good idea to follow up for your protection.
