Rosa Parks Transportation Center, Lafayette, Louisiana
The Rosa Parks Transportation Center, named for iconic Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks, is a transportation hub for Amtrak and Greyhound travel. Situated in downtown Lafayette, the center also houses a branch U.S. Post Office, the city’s traffic and transit department, and AOC Community Media, the area’s public access television station. More than merely a building, the Rosa Parks Transportation Center is an indispensable component of public life as it shelters vital community services. As such, the building must be operational even under severe weather conditions that are known to frequently hit southern Louisiana.
JELD-WEN provided wood windows that have an exceptional warranty—a critical condition the builder needed. It was important to reinforce the building to the extent that it would be operational during severe weather such as a hurricane. JELD-WEN Custom Wood windows with impact glazing meet some of the nation’s toughest building codes. These codes specify that windows must withstand a nine-pound 2”X4” traveling at 50 feet per second.
Windows protect a structure and the people inside from storms and the debris and moisture they bring. During a severe storm, a broken window can affect a building’s structural integrity. JELD-WEN windows stand up to weather with ImpactGard® laminated glass technology designed to resist impacts and forced entry. Even if a severe storm punishes windows until the glass cracks, the shards will adhere to the interlayer and remain in the frame.
JELD-WEN Custom Wood Windows do more than protect against severe storms. They are long-lasting, durable, and protect against the rampant everyday threat of wood rot because they are made with AuraLast® Wood. JELD-WEN’s proprietary AuraLast Wood is guaranteed to protect against wood rot for 20 years. Because the water-based AuraLast process releases 96% fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than typical dip-treatments, it’s easier on the environment than other products.
“It means a lot to me to have a product you can rely on,” said Bobby Domingue, millwork sales manager for Doug Ashy Building Materials, Inc. who supplied the products to the job site.
Equally important, however, were the aesthetic concerns. Gorgeous mahogany interiors grace the second story Custom Wood windows. The Mesa Red clad-wood exterior finish provides striking detail and pairs nicely with the structure’s stucco exterior.
