IRC Codes for Egress

Note: To meet egress, a window must comply with all four IRC requirements.

2nd floor and above:
Clear opening width ≥ 20"
Clear opening height ≥ 24"
Minimum clear opening sq.ft. = 5.7 sq.ft.
Maximum sill height above the floor = 44"

First floor (grade) egress requirements:
Note: Does not apply in all jurisdictions.
Clear opening width ≥ 20"
Clear opening height ≥ 24"
Minimum clear opening sq.ft. = 5.0 sq.ft.
Maximum sill height above the floor = 44"
