2014 IBS Trend News: Historic and Contemporary Styles Converge
Historic vs. Contemporary: This Year, Homeowners Want a Balance of Both
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Call it a sign of the times, an expression of individuality or a nation ready for something new. Whatever it is, it’s clear that U.S. homeowners are moving more toward the middle when it comes to the “historic vs. contemporary” design debate.
For 2014, manufacturers such as JELD-WEN, a leading window and door company, are seeing a mash-up of style trends; combining the charm of historic with the clean, simple lines of contemporary style.
“It used to be that homeowners sought out a specific design period for their home. They focused on a certain moulding detail, doors to match and everything needed to be authentic to the period,” said Elizabeth Souders, director of product management for JELD-WEN. “Now, forget about drawing a hard line. We’re seeing people adding some period pieces, but also not being afraid to mix in more contemporary door designs, for example.”
Added to that is the desire for historic style elements, yet some very contemporary technology.
“No one wants to go back to the era of inefficient, single-paned windows and high-maintenance materials,” said Souders. “They may want to replicate that look, but they insist on having the newest, high performance technology behind it.”
To that end, JELD-WEN is featuring a number of new historic and contemporary products designed to blend the two to give homeowners the compromises they crave:
Historic details with a modern mix
In perfect harmony with both historic styling and contemporary performance features, JELD-WEN has introduced beautiful, rich handmade bent glass design options for its wood windows. Familiar to lovers of homes accented with turrets, this design option used to be found only at custom glass specialty shops. Now bent glass can be incorporated into JELD-WEN’s Custom Window line which is standard with solid pine AuraLast® wood.
Old style, new tricks
Old favorites reminiscent of historic farmhouses are getting a contemporary facelift in a stylish blend of modern and traditional. JELD-WEN’s Dutch doors embody this philosophy, with the options to incorporate updated styling, more contemporary panel and glass designs and innovative new features such as an operable glass unit in the top half so the door can be opened three ways instead of the traditional two.
The JELD-WEN Tilt & Turn window is yet another example of what could be considered a historic design in Europe, but with new contemporary appeal in the U.S. Tilt & Turn wood windows offer the functionality of a casement window (hinged on the side to swing outward) and the ventilation of a hopper window (hinged on the bottom to open inward at the top). Increasingly popular among U.S. homeowners for building and remodeling projects, it provides energy efficiency, enhanced security and design freedom.
JELD-WEN W-2500 Casement & Double-Hung windows now come in a traditional sash option with thicker wood components and custom size options fitting for traditional style. The line also offers the standard sash with a larger daylight opening for a contemporary look.
Traditional design, updated
Many homeowners love traditional designs, but they aren’t always fond of overly fussy or ornate designs that come with them. JELD-WEN’s updated craftsman interior doors, with crisp lines and simple panels, are highly popular and used in both contemporary and historic home designs.
