Salvaged and Stylish: JELD-WEN Introduces Reclaimed Wood Windows & Doors
In a first for the industry, what’s old is new again with JELD-WEN Custom Reclaimed Wood line
February 07, 2012

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – For homeowners, architects and builders, respecting the heritage of what’s old by breathing new life and purpose into it is definitely in keeping with one of this year’s hottest home style trends.
Reclaimed wood products have surged in popularity, thanks not only to the beautiful authentic style they deliver, but for their environmental benefits and interesting histories. JELD-WEN has taken the notion of reuse and recycling to a whole new level by becoming the first major manufacturer to offer reclaimed wood window and door products as part of the company’s Custom Wood line.
Made from Douglas fir that was originally used for fencing, barns, houses and factories, JELD-WEN brings this durable wood back to life by reclaiming it for stylish windows and doors. With a rustic appearance that can complement a variety of architectural styles, Douglas fir is known for its hardiness, consistent grain pattern and natural golden tones that may deepen over time. As with all JELD-WEN® Custom Wood products, homeowners can select nearly any style, design or detail – from glass options to hardware accents – they desire.
“This is the type of material that has such a unique quality of style and beauty to it, all of which highlights the original character of the wood. The reclaimed wood we use makes every window and door a truly one-of-a-kind centerpiece with an interesting story to share too,” said Rick Abel, JELD-WEN product marketing manager.
In fact, one source of JELD-WEN’s reclaimed material is from snow fencing, used to prevent snow drifts along highways in states such as Wyoming. As these fences are replaced, the wood that is specifically used to stand up to such harsh conditions is reclaimed by JELD-WEN to make reliable windows and doors that allow the wood’s heritage and history to shine through.
JELD-WEN’s reclaimed wood options include weathered, skip planed and planed finishes for doors, and planed finishes for windows, giving homeowners the option to mix and match window and door styles or achieve a coordinated look. JELD-WEN® Custom Reclaimed Wood windows are available with exterior cladding in a variety of color choices to deliver the ultimate protection against the elements, while the interior of the windows reflect the unique characteristics of the reclaimed material.

Glossary
Reclaimed wood: Wood that has been salvaged, restored and reused for other purposes and products.
“Weathered” wood option (available for JELD-WEN Reclaimed Wood doors): Reclaimed wood that is as close to the condition of the original salvaged wood as possible. This option typically has a very rustic, non-machined look and feel.
“Skip planed” wood option (available for JELD-WEN Reclaimed Wood doors): A blend of weathered and planed techniques, this option has been smoothed out slightly in certain areas, while allowing some of the original character to shine through.
“Planed” wood option (available for JELD-WEN Reclaimed Wood doors & windows): A finish that smoothes out the wood and removes some surface imperfections that are inherent in reclaimed wood. Planed products still provide a rustic, yet more consistent and refined look, while still allowing many of the wood’s characteristics to shine through.
